This species is very similar to banded topminnow, Fundulus cingulatus, but can be distinguished by having 5 preopercular pores and red side of head and jaws on large male (Ref. 86798).
Occurs in shallow, often ephemeral, water bodies, including ditches, marshes, and backwaters of sluggish creeks and small to medium rivers. Usually found near vegetation (Ref. 86798).
