Etymology: Hypsibarbus: Greek, hypsi = high + Latin, barbus = barbel (Ref. 45335);  pierrei: Not Labeo pierrei (Sauvage, 1880) in Kottelat (2001: Ref. 43281:57), which is Lobochilus pierrei Sauvage, 1880 - current accepted name Bangana pierrei (Sauvage, 1880). -note from Nicolas.

Has 4 horizontal scale rows between lateral line and mid-dorsal scale row at dorsal-fin origin; 5-8 gill rakers in lower limb of first arch (Ref. 12693). Has 15-19 serrae along posterior edge of last simple dorsal ray (Ref. 43281).
