Etymology: Hasemania: Because of John D. Haseman, the American collector of fishes (Ref. 45335); negodagua: From Nego D'áqua, a legendary, manlike creature from Central Brazil, said to dwell in the bottom of rivers and attack inattentive fishermen at night. Noun in apposition.
Eponymy: John Diederich Haseman (1882–1969) was a zoologist and ichthyologist. [...] Nego D’água is a creature of Brazilian legend. He is said to be man-like, with webbed hands and feet. الأشواك الظهرية (المجموع) : 2; الأشعة الظهرية الناعمة (المجموع) : 8 - 9; شوكة شرجية: 4; أشعه شرجية لينه: 14 - 17; فقرات: 29 - 32. Distinguished from most Hyphessobrycon species (except H. taurocephalus) by the absence of an adipose fin (versus presence); and by the unique, possibly autapomorphic color pattern of mature males, which consists of a high concentration of dark chromatophores, mainly on the posterior part of the body, behind a vertical through the anal-fin origin, and the white color of the distal portions of the anal and dorsal fins.
