Etymology: Badis: 'badis' is presumably a Bengali local name, possibly derived from 'bhedo' or 'bheda', but it lacks a proper reference. Probably incorrect etymology (J. Müller, pers. comm., April 2021, after information from native speakers); kanabos: From the slender shape of males in compariosn with the otherwise similar B. badis.

Body depth 29.9-35.4%SL; interorbital width 7.3-8.6% SL. Conspicuous dark blotch anteriorly in the dorsal fin, between 3rd-5th spine. Distal extrascapular present. Vertical bars on sides as multiple emphasized narrow lines. Caudal fin with dark bar across base or midbasal rounded dark blotch (Ref. 46238).
