Etymology: Knipowitschia: Because of N.M.Knipowitsch, a zoologist and Russian ichthyologist from the Academy of Sciences. Expeditions in "Pomor" and "Pervosvanniy" ships to Azov and Black sea (1898-1908).
Eponymy: Nikolai Mikhailovich Knipovich (also given as Knipowitsch) (1862–1939) was a Russian oceanographer, marine zoologist and ichthyologist. [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Europe: Greece. Known only from the Pinios river system of Thessaly, which empties into the Thermaikos Gulf of the northern Aegean.

Duri punggung (Keseluruhan (total)) : 6 - 8; duri punggung lunak (Keseluruhan (total)) : 7 - 9; Duri dubur: 1; Sirip dubur lunak: 7 - 9; vertebrata, bertulang belakang: 30 - 32. Anterior oculoscapular and preopercular head canals present; scales mostly restricted to axillary patch, but with scattered scales along lateral midline of caudal peduncle. Males with numerous thin vertical striae on flank.
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
