This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: dorsal/anal fin-ray formula 9/8; pectoral fin rays 17, some branched; cephalic sensory-pore system pattern I (complete); absence of fifth segmented pelvic-fin ray; pelvic-fin membranes not well-developed; branches on fourth pelvic-fin ray 5-9; non-fimbriate genital papilla; dorsal fin with the first 2 spines filamentous; slender body 17.9-22.2%SL; 2 distinct dark spots on pectoral-fin base; a dark subcutaneous spot midlaterally at posterior end of caudal peduncle (Ref. 83982).
