Etymology: Malthopsis: Greek, malthe, es = a marine fish of soft flesh (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: The type was taken by Mr Mansaku Kobayashi of Yokkaichi, Mya Prefecture. We have not been able to find further details about him. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

الأشعة الظهرية الناعمة (المجموع) : 4 - 6; أشعه شرجية لينه: 4. This species is characterized by the following: subopercular buckler dull, with few blunt spinelets at its tip; ventral surface is covered with minute prickles; pointed rostrum, directed rather forward than upward; principal bucklers on dorsal surface relatively small and flattened, interspace fully covered by small bucklers and prickles (Ref. 86633).
