Etymology: Trichomycterus: Greek, thrix = hair + Greek, mykter, -eros = nose (Ref. 45335); argos: The specific name argos (Greek.), meaning a hundred-eyed monster, refers to the eye-spotted color pattern of the new species, not forming vermiculations.

ก้านครีบอ่อนที่หาง (รวม) : 8 - 9; ก้านครีบอ่อนที่ก้น: 6 - 7. Distinguished by the following characters: pectoral fins with six branched rays; pectoral-fin ray prolonged as a filament; presence of pelvic fins; tip of nasal barbels extending to posterior border of opercular plate of odontodes; presence of a large foramen for ramus lateralis accessorius facialis, visible in dorsal view, in the parietosupraoccipital bone; transverse and straight border between the parietosupraoccipital and frontal bones; body covered with spots that seldom attain eye diameter; pelvic-fin origin placed one or two ocular diameters anterior to dorsal-fin origin; absence of spots fused as elongated marks on dorsum or flank (Ref. 90333).
