Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausiblesingula: Name from Latin 'singulus' for one, referring to the obvious black spot on the occiput; noun in apposition.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: all cephalic sensory-canal pores absent; dorsal/anal fin-ray formula of 8/7; some of the pectoral-fin rays are branched; fifth pelvic-fin ray 14.6-18.2% of the fourth pelvic-fin ray; presence of an obvious dark occipital spot; without dark spot at preural centrum; the first dorsal fin is clear with a basal dark spot and a dark distal margin (Ref. 109221).
