Etymology: Pseudochromis: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); stellatus: Name from Latin meaning starry or starred, referring to the yellow spots on the upper part of the body (name selected by high school students as part of a science activity in the Macleay Museum).

This species was ollected in 55-62 m and observed to at least 70 m depth. It is found on deep reef slopes with gentle incline but exposed to strong currents and generally found in association with small gorgonian sea fans or low-growing barrel sponges (Ref. 118104).
