Etymology: Rasbora: Rasbora, an Indian word for a fish, also used in Malay peninsula; ataenia: Name from Latin noun 'taenia' meaning ribbon or band; prefix ‘a’ means ‘without’; the name 'ataenia'refers to the absence of a mid lateral color band on the body of the new fish.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: no lateral color stripe; body slender, its depth 19.4-21.7 % SL; dorsal fin branched rays 7; anal fin branched rays 5; snout short (26.1- 28.6 % HL); head deep (HD 58.4- 62.2 % HL) (Ref. 132412).
