Etymology: shakhovskoyi: Named after Ilya Borisovich Shakhovskoy, from the Laboratory of oceanic ichthyofauna of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: gill rakers at first gill arch 18; D III,11; pectoventral distance along the horizontal line between the verticals of the lower edge of the pectoral fin and the origin of the pelvic fin < 5% SL; body depth 25.4-26.4% SL; head length 37.5-40.2% SL; upper jaw length 55.6-59.5% HL; pectoral fin reaches the vertical line of middle of anal fin (Ref. 132586).

Vertical migration of this fishh occurred at depths from 100-200 m to 1000-1250 m. At night, post-larvae (1.0-1.4 cm SL) and juveniles (1.5-1.7 cm SL) occurred at depths from 100-200 to 900-1000 m; and for sub-adults (1.8-2.1 cm SL) and adult fish (2.0-2.5 cm SL), from 500-600 to 1000-1250 m. At daytime, the fish migrated to greater depths: post-larvae and juvenile from 400-500 to 900-1000 m, and for sub-adults and adults from 700-800 to 900-1000 m. Most catches of were carried out by closing fishing gear (Ref. 132586).
