Etymology: Phenacorhamdia: Greek, phenax, -akos = deceptive + Brazilian vernacular name, Nhamdia/Jamdia (Ref. 45335); cuspidata: Name 'cuspidata' from the Latin words 'cuspis' and 'atus', meaning 'pointed' and 'make pointed', in reference to the multicuspidate teeth in both premaxilla and dentary of the species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: multicuspid teeth; 48-52 vertebrae; pelvic-fin origin distinctly anterior to dorsal-fin origin; body uniformly colored; pectoral fin with six branched rays; maxillary barbel not reaching pectoral-fin origin; shorter first pectoral-fin ray vs second (Ref. 133468).
