Etymology: Priocharax: Greek, prio = to saw + Greek, charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335); phasma: Name 'phasma' from the Greek word 'fásma', meaning 'ghost', in reference to the almost completely transparent appearance of the novel species, resembling a ghost. Noun in apposition.

Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 8 - 10; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 21 - 27; Ryggkotor: 32 - 34. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: complete lack of pigmentation on the body; maxillary teeth in slightly irregular series 13-21; dentary teeth 18-26; single postcleithrum present; two infraorbitals present, Ios 1+2; anal-fin rays 21-26; branched pelvic-fin rays 5; claustrum absent; adipose fin absent; anal-fin base 32-38; caudal peduncle 13-19 (Ref. 133463).
